Oh.  Look.  The BT Trial Deck did okay.  To be fair that Trial Deck in itself is already a better deck than Megacolony, Tachikaze, Nubatama, Granblue, Dimension Police, Nova Grappler and of course Aqua Force so it's no surprise.  What the hell IS that Naru list in the singles tournament though.

Cardfight!! Vanguard V - Episode 42 Review

This is far and away one of the best episodes in this series.  Turns out when the team actually puts legitimate effort into this show it's actually a really good watch.  It's a god damn shame that episodes like this are so rare and I'm sure next week's episode will be a return to the usual drivel.  Well at least Naoki got a good episode written around him (again) as this was quite compelling and once again proves my theory that VG anime episodes written with the Narukami character as it's focus are a bajillion times better than usual.

In addition to the on place +1 in game he also causes +1 to the animation budget.

So what did this episode do right?  Pretty much everything.  Naoki's character arc has been pretty easy to follow and this ep follows up on what's been happening in a realistic manner; Naoki's picked up Vanguard, is having fun with the others in the club but otherwise his life hasn't changed.  He's still unable to stand out in the eyes of others and he's still looked down upon by his brother as a quitter.  Kourin continually telling him these things through a PSY-Qualia link that they have going on is also making it worse as any time he seems to be able to snap out of this she brings him back in line by attacking him where it hurts.  Aichi for his worth is also trying his best free Naoki as he keeps telling him that he's changed and this entire scene is complimented by good use of V's middle of the road OST.  It also helps that the animation budget got expanded considerably as we have a fight here that's moving with the same level of fluidity and epicness that hasn't been seen since Team Try-3 took down Gyze.

I have nothing witty to say.  This just looks really cool.

Alongside this we have a quick update on Kai's situation and not alot happens other than Miwa running off to avoid helping him carry groceries and no doubt meeting Ibuki along the way.  Back to characters we actually care about Naoki continues to wrestle with what he's been told by two different sides as he's still guilty over how he ignored Aichi being bullied as a kid and he thinks himself as a monster for it.  Aichi more or less tells him he's no monster as what he's done since the two met again is proof of that and that they're team mates plus other friendship/heart of the cards stuff.  It almost works as Naoki all but says that this fight isn't poper until Kourin once again steps in, says that he will never be a true team mate of Aichi's unless he's able to rival him in strength (oof, that's actually a solid point?) so there's only one real way to make it happen.  Naoki then coldly proclaims that "Break Time is over" in both an awesome call back to the original series that is also really saddening as he "Break Rides" Detonix Stinger Dragon.

So uh...this guy kinda ended up being the best Restander in the game until DOtG gets released.

Drill boi hits the field and Naoki completely rips it apart as he goes on the attack and declares that he'll shine just as brightly as Aichi.  He flips a front and goes for the second check but hesitates as despite seemingly committing to Kourin's suggestions a few seconds ago he's still fighting her influence.  She again tells him to keep going and its at this point that Aichi notices something else is having an effect on this fight and before Naoki defeats him with a crit he sees that it's Takuto or rather the thing that he's become.  Aichi is defeated and gets attacked by Takuto, Kourin and Naoki in PSY-Qualia world which causes him to pass out IRL while Naoki watches, realizes what he's done and also passes out while urging Kourin to stop all of this.  Misaki picks up on this and after seeing to it the two are resting in the infirmary she tells Shingo to keep them from fighting as she has to see someone; Kourin.

One of the best episodes in the series?  Fuck that.  This is the best.  Kai and Ren episodes have got nothing on this.

Cardfight!! Vanguard V - Episode 41 Review

Following our edgy conclusion to last week's episode this one kicks off with Kamui barging into the shop that Aichi, Ibuki and Kyou are in.  I'm a bit surprised that Kamui found Aichi so easily which in turn kills some of the storyline tension that I mentioned in the last review but on the other hand Ibuki completely shreds Aichi's character so that's a plus.  He realities that the guy has PSY-Qualia like him but he's basically a non factor in his eyes due to how he fights.  TL:DR Aichi isn't fighting seriously enough in his opinion because all he does is fight out of habit or obligation but never out of a fierce desire...which is actually a valid point.  If you compare Aichi's fights in the reboot compared to the original up to this point you'd notice that OG Aichi had multiple fights that he felt that he had to win because there was something integral on the line.  V Aichi has had maybe one fight where he legitimately felt that losing wasn't an option (and it wasn't the Ren fight might I add) but I also attribute this to the surprising lack of apocalypse fights in the series so far.

Even in a dream Kyou is misplaying.

Kamui and Kyou are both displeased by this and the latter challenges Ibuki to a fight while Rekka sics Zombie Shingo on the people in the room.  We immediately skip to the Grade 3 turn and Ibuki pushes Kyou to 5 damage vs his 1 which leaves him open to getting hit by the full Zanbaku lock followed by a rush turn that puts him to 5 as well.  Kyou gets a PSY-Qualia vision that shows him the rest of the game where he'll win by riding Dueling Dragon, Zangeki and smashing Ibuki's face in but this gets turned on its head by him calling Lie Down Deletor, Givun and anyone who is familiar with the original Deletor deck nows shit is going to go down now.  Ibuki presses a now Deleted Kyou with big beats and uses Givun's skill to stand his Vanguard to win the fight and erase his opponent's attachments to the game much to the shock of the others.  Kamui is upset while Ibuki makes a grand gesture about Vanguard being a curse and freeing people from it via his ability should be seen as a good thing but Aichi flat out snaps at him with a level of anger not seen since his first fight with Kyou.  Everything is set for the big showdown between the two most powerful PSY-Qualia users in this show...except Shingo appears to completely kill the mood.

"Why didn't I play the Shirayuki engine!?"

Aichi immediately deduces that he's been Zombie'd based on his new behaviour and the rest of the zombies join in on the hunt while Rekka bails.  Everyone else follows suit by choice or force and after a fierce conversation between Aichi and Ibuki we cut to what's going on with Kai's group which of course consists of Ren fan service.  I guess after multiple Misaki leg shots up until now and seeing Kourin's ass in spandex during first ED of this season this show was overdue for some fan service for the 3 women who watch this show.  It lasts too long before we cut back to Aichi beating Shingo followed by the two meeting up with Misaki as they exchange information.  Aichi is worried about Kourin since they haven't been able to keep in contact with her and what's even worse is that Naoki has gone missing.  Okay now you've got my attention.

Metal Gear Rekka.

Over at Fukuhara Tetsu is surprised to see all of the club members back to normal including Suiko who fills him in on what's happened.  When asked about why she's doing this given that she'd kind of one of the bad guys she more or less says that she's out of the fight now and to grab some popcorn to watch the shitshow that is this anime...I mean this arc...I mean the situation.  Shit.  The epsisode mercifully comes to an end with Aichi, Shingo and Misaki coming to Miyaji's Cardfight Club only to find a Zombified Naoki challenging our hero to a fight which gets accepted.

This episode was horrible.  One of the worst ones to come in a while and it honestly drives back home that at the end of the day this reboot anime is fucking garbage and good episodes are the exception than the norm.  Whenever I've blasted this show people have said to me that "well it's better than GZ so that's something?" to which I have to ask how fucking low have your standards become if you're willing to accept this steaming pile of shitOG Season 1-3 set the standard, half of G raised the bar in retrospect and GZ blew it.  This however is not that much better than it in fact I'd say that V is on the way to being worse than GZ as that season failed because it couldn't live up to the hype and derped all of its good ideas.  Vanguard V is just a bad rehash of the original series and everything that it did that the OG series did V managed to do worse.  The fights are terrible, the animation is substandard for 2018-2019 and I know this studio can do better, the plot is card game anime trope as all hell, the characters are considerably less developed and fleshed out as their OG counterparts (which makes a comment someone said on here a while ago hilarious because he said the OG cast was dry and the V cast hit the mark) and I don't give a shit if the manga its based off of is inspired by Yu-Gi-Oh! because the writer was involved with Yu-Gi-Oh! R.  That just means its a shitter Yu-Gi-Oh!  How is it that this show exists at the same time Buddyfight Ace is a thing?  I haven't watched the show personally but people I've talked to unanimously praise it for being one of, if not the best Card Game anime airing at this time with Yu-Gi-Oh! Vrains just behind it.

God and there's still 9 or more episodes left of this letdown of a season.  The much vaunted "PSY-Qualia Zombie Arc" that is a "better Reverse Arc" that people said to me.  HAH.  What a load of drivel.  Remember in my review of Episode 27 that going into this arc that V's incompetent writing staff had the potential to ruin this storyline by trying to cram everything into a 25 episode season filled with shitty fights, bad pacing and blatant fanservice?

Now how does the saying go?  Oh yes.  I believe it goes like this: I expected nothing and I'm still disappointed.

At this point I think the format has pretty much settled.  Murakumo continues to be the BDIF followed by Angel Feather, Shadow Paladin, Royal Paladin and Great Nature on an initial glance.  Funnily enough AF's matchup into Kumo has become a bit better for them now that they've dropped Mandala Lord from the deck which was the Grade 3 that scared them the most.  I also see that the sole DP player managed to sack his way to a top as the clan is wont to do.

Cardfight!! Vanguard V - Episode 40 Review

This episode was surprisingly solid?  It really didn't do anything egregious and it expanded on some things in ways I didn't expect.  What I took away most from this is how for once the show's break neck pacing is actually working in its favour for once as the constant jumps between different groups during the zombie outbreak, the musical scores used and the people involved instills a sense of tension to the viewer.  Watching this you can't help but think "jesus christ get out of there!" when you see Aichi, Naoki and Shingo follow Kyou to a card shop filled with zombies while Kamui is running around the city trying to warn him.  I'll give credit to the anime where it's due as they're doing a good job of making this arc feel like a typical zombie apocalypse while using some of the associated tropes effectively.

The episode begins with everyone in Card Capital catching each other up on what's happening while Tetsu and Asaka warn Misaki that Kourin may be a threat given her association with Takuto.  Misaki calls the Club over but Kamui decides to go meet them on the way out of concern for Aichi given all that's happened.  We also get a funny scene of Misaki agreeing to room with Asaka while Tetsu and Ren impose themselves on Kai who does not take it well at all.  We get actual anime faces and a Big No scream which is an actual first for the character in all of his appearances in the franchise.  Up until this point the most comical thing Kai did was eyebrow twitch when Chrono called him and Ibuki old people.

Kai staunchly refuses the idea of being given an actual personality.

After this the episode shifts to Aichi, Naoki and Shingo on their way to Capital when they're accosted by Kyou who takes them to one of the shops that our blue haired hero took down during the AL4 Arc.  Once we get into the shop Aichi immediately notices something is wrong while we get one of the best reactions to someone explaining PSY-Qualia from Naoki and Shingo.  Rekka is also present and explains she gave everyone the power as Professor O steps up to challenge Aichi and we once again get a montage of him tearing through fighters.  From this we get some interesting tidbits however;

-Aichi is able to face and defeat the PSY-Qualia Zombies in the shop without needing to use his own PSY-Qualia (probably a parallel to him not needing it when he floored them all in the first place)
-Aichi notices that the PSY-Qualia his opponent has is not natural as the fighter's units aren't fighting for them like his do and after he defeats them the power vanishes.

It's a bullshit plot device.  Ez.

While this is going on Shingo challenges Rekka to a Cardfight so we get Neo Nectar vs Nubatama (Magatsu) while Naoki steps out of the shop to follow Kourin who had been tailing the group.  Turns out she's still not quite fully a zombie yet as she'd been fighting the influence of the condition (earlier in the episode Asaka explained that a zombie is compelled to fight people who aren't infected) all this time and had been avoiding the club in order to keep everyone safe.  Upon seeing Aichi go with Kyou however I think her desire to keep him out of harms way overruled all of that which makes me wonder what would have happened if Aichi fought Kyou right away.  Would Kourin have stepped in and had a confrontation with Rekka leading to a fight between zombies?  Would Takuto have exerted more of his will and erased her will to make her a true zombie?  I think I would have liked to have seen that outcome over Aichi beating a bunch of mooks repeatedly even if doing that had a purpose.

Putting the Force Marker on VC?  You fiend!

The fight between Rekka and Shingo plays out pretty accurate to how a real matchup between the two would be as Rekka gets a full early game rush to obtain a damage lead and because her opponent isn't using the Kujikiricongo cards she does't have to worry about her hand being ripped apart by the dumb bird.  Shingo is able to somewhat close the gap but between Rekka having magic plot hax powers, a better clan and winning the dieroll he gets completely shitstomped on her 2nd Cecilia turn.  We don't see Shingo get turned into a Zombie immediately but I'm assuming he will be one by next episode.  Aichi is done dealing with which Kyou is all to happy to hear as now he gets his shot when Ibuki steps into the store and everyone but Aichi cringes from strange sound made by his presence.  Rekka freaks out at the sight of him while Kyou's PSY-Qualia warns him that Ibuki's power is legitimate compared to his own.  Interesting how Ibuki's PSY-Qualia causes visible pain to the zombies now compared to his last appearance and that Aichi's presence doesn't have a similar effect.  Probably has to do with Ibuki's connection with Deletors but we'll find that out next week as the episode ends with him declaring that he'll destroy Vanguard and delete everyone in the room.

God I hope that doesn't become his catch phrase now.

Well that escalated quickly.  Link Joker continues to be a flop and will be until EB06 and Murakumo is starting to take a grip on the format.  Would it be presumptuous for me to declare them the BDIF?  Possibly but I'm going to make that claim regardless as the addition of the Shirayuki engine does so much to patch up its problems by giving it a strong defensive play vs aggressive decks and a powerful finisher against slower decks after you've Zanbaku'd the opponent for a turn or two.  Great Nature is following suit as the 2nd most successful accel deck of the format (rip Narukami) and Gold Paladin is somehow doing better now than last format when Protect clans were the BDIF.  What the hell?

Granted these are teams and there's the chance that GP got carried here and there.  We will never know without records to show.  OTT, AF and SP are still hanging in there but I honestly believe that all 3 of them lose to Kumo on a good day.  Bermuda Triangle will probably be the clan that slays them based on how the deck is currently looking, however.
