Cardfight!! Vanguard V - Episode 47 Review

Our episode begins with Ren's group approaching Takuto with the intent to fight but that gets sidestepped for a bit as we get some more exposition.  Some of it is stuff that we've already heard with the whole "Cray is real" part but Ren like the rest of us watching this season doesn't give a shit and wants to know who Takuto is exactly which leads to them having a Cardfight which if I may add was something that we never got to see in the original.  Admittedly Ren probably would have lost that one since Glendios' Omega Locks would have fucked him royally but still I'll give this season credit for showing us matchups we never got to see with the original.  More's the pity considering how inferior the writing and look of this show is.

What the hell is with Misaki's face!?  She looks derpy not dastardly!

Aichi fills everyone in on what's going on while commenting that he hopes that Ren will become their teammate which Misaki agrees with but Kourin argues that this isn't what he wants but what Takuto wants.  Acihi rebuts this by saying she's also Takuto's teammate as well and asks her to work for his sake as well which pisses Naoki straight off while his general attitude creeps out the rest.  Misaki tells Aichi that the fight is about to begin and we cut to both players standing up their Vanguards with Takuto debuting a new type of Link Joker archetype: Starhulk (formerly known as Star-Corpse among the playerbase).  You thought Omega Glendios was a cheeky final boss deck?  This deck literally says "hold my beer" as it's entire gimmick is based on mind fucking your opponent.

The two trade early game blows while Takuto continues to exposition about the Concert Master and the link between Vanguard and Cray with the stuff we've heard before.  Cardfights influence the world of Cray itself and all that jazz that led to Shiranui going full psychopath in the original timeline.  He adds that the introduction of PSY-Qualia users and their fights have made these infuences much more powerful than usual to the point of throwing the balance of power on Cray out of whack.  Tetsu then asks if the former Takuto was the Concert Master then who is this guy that is trying to control fighters as zombies and he gets the answer of "a different Takuto possessing the same body."  He goes onto say that like humans riding units in the game that he is riding the person that is Takuto Tatsunagi...which I think is a reference to Diffriding from Vanguard G or maybe it's not a reference at all!  While he's saying this there's a totally not ominous looking shadow appearing behind him that makes me thing that the thing possessing Takuto's body is Brandt itself diffriding him.  The fight continues as Ren and Takuto both flip heals on the latter's G2 ride while Tetsu can't help but notice that something about the Starhulk units he's seeing is unnatural compared to the other cards he's seen including Ibuki's Deletors.

"MY EDGE IS MAXIMUMER!"

Takuto says that those were his advanced guard and even if Ibuki doesn't realize he is being used as such (last episode however we know that he knows) both he and Zombie Aichi will help him accomplish his goals.  Which are what by the way?  We're at roughly 4 episodes left in this season and we still don't know what the major antagonist wants to do!  He's taking control of fighters and then...profit?  Normally these things are established when there's 10 or less episodes left in a season (see the Tower of Hanoi arc from Vrains).

Ren says what Takuto's been doing makes him sick and he rides Phantom Blaster Dragon while shitting out a board and turning on his PSY-Qualia.  Takuto PG's his Vanguard attack but Ren uses his plothax to flip double crits for his other unit which manages to land a hit to put the damage to 5-2 in his favour.  Takuto isn't bothered by this at all and even remarks that as a PSY-Qualia user that Ren must surely be beloved by his units...which is what will lead to his undoing as he rides his own avatar; Wandering Starhulk Ruler, Brandt.

Eh.  Star Corpse sounded cooler.

Brandt has been a card that was the topic of much debate on what he would do in this continuity as his original ability involved reversing trigger effects and something like that was so out there as a concept at the time.  Would the new version of Brandt keep this effect or would they go a step further and have him reverse Imaginary Gift effects?   Welp the answer is he's kept the Trigger reverse effect which given how Standard Format is so swingy based on Triggers could lead to some nasty shit in the future.  In the context of the anime this is also pretty obscene as the main characters are notorious for trigger sacking to win close fights and in this case Ren used his PSY-Qualia to rip a 5th damage heal that under the effects of Brandt dealt him a 6th damage instead.  Ren gets blasted by this and even Kai feels it from across the city as Takuto explains what happens while turning our favourite red head into a zombie.

We call that "Nostalgia pandering."

Takuto then goes on to answer my question from earlier and more or less says that now that he has the strongest fighters as zombies (and no more use for the Called Walkers) he can move onto his end goal of having Brandt take over Planet Cray itself  much to the shock of everyone.

Okay but what else.  You're going to rule the world of the card game itself.  That still doesn't actually do anything from the perspective of the real world.  There's no actual danger to Earth and unless Cray falling to Brandt has some real world ramifications this is an overall lame plan.  The rest of the world literally does not give a shit about all of this!

Anyway Naoki challenges Takuto but he says Aichi will be his opponent instead but changes his mind once Ibuki arrives.

Cardfight!! Vanguard V - Episode 46 Review

I was wondering how they were going to handle Zombie Aichi and two minutes into this episode I got my answer.  Aichi's gone full on villain and it's glorious.  It reminds me of when he went off the deep end with Shadow Paladin in OG Season 1 but they decided to go all the way here as his cringy facial expressions and edgy vocal tones make him come off as a flat out creeper when he's talking to Misaki.  Anyway the two of them throw down as Aichi wants her to become "his teammate" and tells Naoki and Shingo not to interfere after Suiko brings them into the room.  We also get an explanation as to why Aichi is still a zombie despite Kourin being defeated and the only way to snap him out of it is to defeat the guy directly which Misaki finds to be easier said than done given his current state.  I wonder what the Zombie status does to someone who already has PSY-Qualia and can summon it at will?

But at what cost?

We cut back to Card Capital and find that Kai's passed out and Kyou says that when he comes to he'll have no interest in Cardfight!! Vanguard which upsets everyone.  This is followed up with Ibuki on the streets acting pissy that Kai somehow managed to find some fun in their fight while he makes his once an episode speech about deleting everything and everyone before coming to the conclusion that all of his actions have been under the guiding hand of Takuto which he hates.  We also get to see Tetsu put his foot in his mouth which I honestly felt wasn't needed here.  The main hook of this episode is seeing Aichi act like a dickhead.  Focus more on that!

After seeing these facial expressions I kind of want them to print an edgey looking Blaster Blade.

The fight continues and Aichi does pretty much what I asked for.  He acts like a villain right down to totally not laughing in a manner that says "I AM EVIL.  LOOK AT MY SINISTER WAYS" as he goes on the offensive with the turn 1 Blaster Blade + Knightbros combo that somehow manages to wake Kourin up.  Naoki fills her in on what's happened as Misaki survives the push but not without Aichi reminding her that he has PSY-Qualia powers and that he already has a vision of how this fight will pan out...and that she knows this.  Misaki fights back by doing OTT things with Rectangle Magus that she uses to set up a crit while making her RG super swoll which Aichi takes to everyone's shock given that he easily had enough shield to stop that.  He just replies with "this fight is already over."

"Children's show."

Kai wakes up and despite looking like hell he decides to go find Aichi which has Kyou baffled due to both of them being deleted by Ibuki.  He decides he wants to know what is it about Vanguard that'd make Kai want to do this still and asks Kamui to teach him how to play again while we cut back to Aichi riding Monarch Alfred.  He goes right on the offensive and Misaki No Guards his Vanguard attack which gets punished with a Double Critical that will win the fight unless Misaki heals out of it...and she doesn't.  Misaki's first damage check is a heal but since Aichi No Guarded on her turn he's got more damage and thus she can't heal a point.

Holy shit did the anime just show off Heal Blocking in a fight!?  This might be the biggest brain play we've seen out of the characters since Koutei damage denied Kai and baited him into negging his hand with Overlord at the start of the series.

Anyway Misaki realizes all too late what's happening along with the startling revelation that he planned out this fight that far ahead and she promptly loses while being turned into a zombie.  With this we now finally have had every character between both the OG and V series get Reversed or Zombie'd with the exception of Ren and Ibuki (Misaki didn't get Reversed and Aichi used PSY-Qualia bullshit to power out of being Reversed.  Leon technically didn't get reversed but a Reversed Clone of him exists) so just like with Aichi I'm curious to see how a now evil Misaki will conduct herself outside of her one line saying that she'll always be at Aichi's side.  The episode ends with Takuto gloating over the fact that many people are on their way to the Tatsunagi home and that the night will be wonderful.  Insert Kefka Laugh here.

Notice something?  Between last weekend's Singles and this weekend's Murakumo is starting to struggle outside of Teams.  Turns out Japan is starting to figure out how to handle the deck and the result is we've all been overhyping a good deck as the BDIF when that title still belongs to Angel Feather.  Why is that?  Well it turns out the current popular build of Kumo (Shiraiyuki) has zero early game what it with it literally having no aggression until you hit that Grade 3 ride.  By comparison Angel Feather, Oracle Think Tank, Royal Paladin, Shadow Paladin, Great Nature and Neo Nectar all have plays from turn 2 onwards and can be the immediate aggressor vs the Murakumo player and put them at 3-4 damage and threaten them for game on the following turns unless Murakumo can heal itself back down.  We've also been giving Shadow Paladin less credit than it deserves as while that deck loses to AF/OTT unquestionably it does matchup reasonably well into the rest of the field.

Will this translate over here?  Possibly?  NA can sometimes be slow on the uptake and I think initially Murakumo will perform strongly when Vilest Deletor drops this week but in due time I think the better VG players out there will figure out what Japan has and exploit the Shirayuki deck's weaknesses.

Cardfight!! Vanguard V - Episode 45 Review

I really shouldn't have watched Yu-Gi-Oh! Vrains Episode 93 before writing this review.  It's only going to make my experiences watching this episode even worse than usual since I've now had the chance to see two "dramatic" two episode battles play out and uh...one is clearly superior than the other.  On a side note the last two episodes of Vrains happened to be the payoff to something that was hinted at since the new season (and the series itself) began which show just how patient the writing staff of this show are when it comes to this narrative.  One of these days I should review an episode of Vrains in this manner.  Maybe the season finale?  Anyway onto boneless Yu-Gi-Oh!

We immediately follow up with people freaking out over Vanish Delete while Kai and Miwa call Ibuki out on being a dick compared to when they were kids more or less.  Kai also goes on the offense with his cards but wisely passes on using Overlord's restand skill to save his hand which Kamui explains to Kyou...who doesn't understand this.  Oh my god the damage is worse than I thought.  Kyou's lost the ability to comprehend basic strategy and can only just blindly play cards and hope for the best!  He's become a Dimension Police player!  Well okay it's actually another effect of having his connection the game severed via Delete but here at The Blue Corner we always take shots at Dimension Police, Shadow Paladin and Bermuda Triangle when possible.

Ibuki rides Docking Deletor, Greion and deletes Dragonic Overlord in his usual edgelord fashion which causes Kamui to also join in on the "what the hell is wrong with you" train that's been chugging full steam this season.  Kai also adds that he can sense hatred and abandonment from Ibuki's cards which brings us back to the topic of him being the one that taught Vanguard to the group.  Ibuki expresses regret at doing so because the world of Vanguard comes with a ranking system that is endless and because of him Kai/Miwa have been drawn into it.  Therefore he has decided to "free" them by severing the bond between Vanguard and Fighter.

Ibuki goes on the offensive and pushes Kai to 4 while aiming to finish him off with Delete End but to his surprise the person he's up against is competent and instead of trying to one pass someone who is known to critsack he just opts to perfect guard the Vanguard attack instead!  On that note how often have we seen Perfect Guards in the V series outside of Protect Gifts?  Now that I think on it most of the guarding plays have been done with triggers in order to make trigger sacking more dramatic.  Regardless Kai survives the turn while Ibuki taunts him over the fear of his connection being severed.  Kai says ofc since Vanguard gives him hope or that's what Ibuki deduces since he had lots of that as a kid before the shit with his parents happened and Kai confirms as such.

Kai rides Dragonic Overlord the Great and uses an ability to call Dragonic Neoflame out of the deck which makes me all the more curious to what his skill actually does.  On place call 1 Neoflame from Deck or Drop Zone?  Kai goes on the attack and we get a little more info on what his cards do as Neoflame gives Overlord a 5k Buff on attack while Overlord itself is Counter Blast 2 for +1 Crit and to restand himself + Neoflame with -1 Drive after discarding 2 cards.  Ouch.  Ibuki PG's the first swing and takes the second on the nose which Kai flips a crit on for the win...except Ibuki has been using PSY-Qualia this fight to Kai's surprise and pulls the 6th damage heal.  Kai immediately demands to know how long Ibuki has had plot hax powers and we get an inner monologue from him about how the power and his Deletor deck came during his despair.  Ibuki gets pissed after this and rides Waving Deletor, Greidhol.

Greidhol immediately Vanish Deletes Neoflame while Ibuki goes into villain mode about how he'll erase everything about Kai as he Deletes the Great and swings with a two crit Vanguard attack that gets no guarded.  Kai remarks to himself as the killing blow is dealt that despite Ibuki's talk about resenting Vanguard that somewhere deep down a part of him still enjoys the game if he's able to manifest PSY-Qualia.  That same power also allows Ibuki to experience some of Kai's memories playing Vanguard including those involving Ren and Aichi which for a short moment I think we see him think "Oh god what have I done?" before going back to being an asshole.  Tetsu calls the shop to let Asaka know that Aichi is on his way to the Tatsunagi residence and that Ren and himself will be following.  Ibuki immediately butts in saying that he'll be heading there as well and that Ren is his next victim.  The episode ends with him leaving Card Capital after Kai says their fight was fun regardless while Naoki and Shingo arrive at the Tatsunagi mansion desperate for a way inside as Zombie Aichi arrives in the same room as Misaki and Kourin.

Uh oh.

On the other hand Melissa is kind of good against Angel Feather and if you shift your focus from trying to murder the opponent with Himiko to trying to mill Angels out you can win the matchup.  Not much else for me to say here other than please make BT reveal season hell end already so we can see what The Great and Azure Dragon do already?
