Cardfight! Vanguard V - Episode 51 Review

Our fight between Takuto and Aichi continues as we get your typical villain and hero speeches from them as the latter takes his turn while riding Ark Saver Dragon.  He uses it's skill to call Blaster Javelin to the field who takes on the appearance of Naoki which Takuto realizes is due to him once being a PSY-Qualia Zombie.  Misaki notices that Naoki himself is not quite there at the moment and that his eyes are doing the PSY-Qualia glow despite not being a zombie anymore.  Kourin also becomes like this as Aichi calls Blaster Arrow from the drop zone who happens to be her IMR in EB06.  I wonder if this means anyone who was made a PSY-Qualia Zombie still has the power of PSY-Qualia itself in a limited capacity?  We'll probably find out next season.  Takuto calls Kourin out for being on Aichi's side despite her destiny of being good Takuto's pawn making this otherwise which surprises Suiko and Rekka.  Kourin more or less says that even though she's a Called Walker she's also one of Aichi's teammates and Takuto realizes that she's accepted her fate of vanishing should Aichi win the fight.

He also calls Blaster Blade from the Soul and goes on the attack but flips Draw/Crit off his twin drive for the major oof.  Naoki + Kourin attack Brandt together and they get PG'd for their effort and I admit that despite all the shit I give this series (and it deserves it) it's moments like this that actually make the "image" concept of Vanguard neat from a narrative perspective.  We saw a little bit of this during GNext when Shiranui and Chrono had their big fight in the finale and again when Chrono, Shion and Tokoha did their super overstride or whatever it was that gave W-Slasher his infamous "Tokoha gets pounded" clip and it was pretty cool back then.  It also helped THAT scene had Chrono's fight theme from GZ which since I'm on the subject Vanguard V hasn't come anywhere close to producing an OST that could compete with GNext and GZ.  Anyway Blaster Blade goes in at 40k and Brandt freaks out because it's Ibuki as the IMR and lets it hit which in turn pisses Takuto off.  And I mean he's angry.  The guy actually says "MY TURN" in English!

Brandt launches his Senturion Clap Burst attack (while also having a lame voice for a boss card compared to Gyze) which gets PG'd and Takuto decides to attack Blaster Arrow instead.  Retiring it causes Kourin to faint while Misaki again tells her that she'll lose her memories if Aichi wins.  Kourin just points at Misaki as the turn ends which has both her and myself confused as Takuto declares that the battle on Planet Cray is going poorly while asking just how long does he expect to hang on with the tide of destiny slipping away.  On Cray we see Blaster Blade grimly wondering if this is the end when surprise reinforcements from pretty much all of the clans seen on TV appear to help in the fight for Planet Cray!  What the fuck is a Tachikaze?

All the clans band together to launch the big counterattack but Planet Brandt is like "lol plz" and decides that today is a good day to die by prepping for ramming speed.  Seems like nothing short of a planet buster is going to be able to stop that thing.  Or the Neo Granzon.  One Degeneracy Cannon should fix up that problem real quick....and probably annihilate Earth and everything else at the same time.  One commercial break later and we're back at the United Sanctuary as all the Blasters are sending their prayers to Aichi who is quick to notice this as he declares to protect Vanguard and Takuto realizes that some crazy shit is about to happen...after a really drawn out stand and draw.  Seriously it took 15 seconds for him to draw his damn card and yes I get they're tying to build up tension and stuff but that kind of time causes tension to be lost and the scene to be mocked more than anything else.  Anyway since at this point we know the contents of EB06 (and most of EB07) Aichi obviously uses those prayers to rip Messianic Lord Blaster off the top.

Takuto freaks out as this MLB (whose summoning scene isn't nearly as good as the first) is the saviour of both Earth and Cray as foretold in the legends or something like that.  Aichi calls Blaster Dagger down who Shingo is the IMR of and goes to attack which Takuto throws up 30k shield to guard.

Oh.  My.  God.  Are they going to do it?  Is this final play going to pan out as I predicted a while back?

Aichi drive checks and doesn't hit a trigger but Blaster Arrow instead and immediately calls it down on the board much to Takuto's dismay.  His second check reveals Blaster Rapier who he also calls down and it takes on the form of Misaki which means the entirety of the Miyaji Vanguard Club + Ibuki are all on the field alongside Aichi as MLB.  Oh and it also turns on his skill to gain a bajillion power and 5 crits so Takuto is super fucked.

Takuto is upset as he's now toast despite being so close to Brandt's goal being completed.  Then Aichi somehow figures out that everything that has been done so far is because Planet Brandt is lonely?  Oh god we're gonna get a friendship speech and an invitation for Brandt to become allies with Cray aren't we.  MLB attacks and obliterates Brandt's forces and Ringer itself who dies quite the anime villain death with facial expressions that would not be out of place in an Obari anime.  Did he sneak in and handle Brandt's design and animations for this episode when nobody was looking?  MLB's attack also smacks Planet Brandt away from Cray which signals the end of the battle for all of the units involved which is met with cheers from all the allied nations.  We also get a brief appearance from Harmonics Messiah while Alfred tells Blaster Blade that it's a being that has silently watched over Earth and Cray all this time (oh and he kinda led an army against Gyze and his forces in this other continuity).

Back to the real world and Aichi is most definitely the winner of the fight as Suiko tells Takuto that he's been finally freed.  A strange light flees from his body as we see in space that Brandt has declared that the fate of its Planet's aimless wandering is over as it now joins Earth and Cray as one of the worlds Harmonics Messiah will watch over now.  Ibuki explains as such as he says that Aichi's powers were able to change the fate of Planet Brandt and calls him a Neon-Messiah which is definitely a nod to the Movie.  He leaves and Kourin tells everyone what is going to happen to her once she's no longer a Called Walker and tells Aichi that what he just did wasn't wrong before he has a chance to Heroic BSoD.  She thanks him instead for freeing and allowing her to return to the life she originally had before being a Called Walker while Naoki declares that even if she loses her memories of everyone they'll still remember her.  Suiko and Rekka tells them that it's no use since once they've been freed that the days that Kourin spent with everyone will have never happened but Misaki says she definitely can remember them because of her photographic memory.  Kourin is unsure and decides to give her the hairband she's always wearing and we get the extremely rare shot of Kourin with nothing in her hair as we fade to white and the next scene is at card capital.

Kai, Ren and Miwa explain that everyone is able to play Vanguard again thanks to Aichi and Kyou confirms that he has been playing thanks to Kamui while Shin remarks that at last this extremely long day is finally over.  The next day we see the Cardfight Club talking about the new predicament of the series in that since Aichi protected Vanguard from Brandt the Club will remain but once Kourin is gone they won't have the minimum amount of members needed to keep it together.  Naoki says the club won't let that happen and that they'll participate in the Vanguard Koshien which she should be that due to Ultra Rare duties.  Kourin isn't so sure about that as the thinks that once the force of destiny corrects itself she's doubtful Ultra Rare will exist but she also says it doesn't matter since as long as she has her Vanguard deck with her that she'll eventually meet everyone again.  The episode ends with Naoki, Shingo and Misaki wearing an armband that she doesn't know why she has but feels nostalgic for while Aichi comes in and notices that there is an empty seat in the room as if it was reserved for someone.  He closes the door for the club room and we see that the sign that designates it as the Cardfight! Club is now gone.  Uh oh.

Thus we've now reached the end of Cardfight!! Vanguard V Season 2 or what I consider to be the end of it as next week's episode is another clip show with chibi characters which I refuse to watch or review.  This season was definitely better than the first in some regards but at the end of the day the same problems that I bitched about in Season 1 repeated here with inconsistent animation, piss poor fights, god awful pacing and an overall poor cast (with the exception of Naoki and Kourin.  My Narukami bias aside I feel like these were the two legitimately well handled characters in the show) when you compare this season to it's original counterpart: The Reverse Arc.

OG Season 3 is often touted as the very best of the Original anime and when people said that the PSY-Qualia Zombe arc was just as good as it I was intrigued but now that we've wrapped it up I'm disappointed.  PSY-Qualia Zombie characters definitely do not hold a candle to Reversed characters and the antagonist Brandt pales in comparison to the Star Vaders.  You had thrilling multi part fights, better versions of the character arcs lightly touched on here and better music too.  The animation in Season 3 was pretty bad but the fights themselves seemed to have better impact with them.  Dragonic Descendant, Tetra-Drive Dragon, Raging Form Dragon, any of the Chaos Breaker Dragon scenes, Monarch Sanctuary Alfred breaking World End and of course Kai Break Riding Dragonic Overlord the Rebirth against Aichi.  That's still one of the best scenes in all of the Vanguard anime.

This arc wasn't nearly as good and as I watched more and more of it the harder it was to continue.  I've had people tell me that the show became unwatchable garbage and they dropped it and one of these people sat through RWBY Volume 5 in all of its entirety (I did as well and oof, it was painful)!  I've gone over my gripes with this anime repeatedly in these reviews and at this point I just don't watch to do this anymore.  I highly doubt I'll be doing reviews of the next season aside from maybe an episode or two that I felt compelled to talk about because at the end of the day this show sucks and the people that think it's fantastic have no fucking standards at all.  Granted it's easy to have no standards when you've been hit with repeatedly bad seasons like GNext and GZ but I assure you both of those are leagues better than this drivel.  If anyone reading this review likes V then good on you.  I didn't and I don't see my opinions on the matter changing anytime soon.  This just simply isn't the card battle anime that I'm looking for and now that we're getting set spoilers before the actual cards appear in the anime (which was a major reason that alot of the people I know bothered to watch the reboot) I've got really no further reason to stick around.

With that said until the foreseeable future what you'll be seeing on the Blue Corner - Blog Station will be OCG Tournament Results and any other random thing that piques my interest.  Until next time this is Bluestar899, jacking out.

Oh and once again Cardfight! Vanguard V is fucking trash. :)

Omni-Dragon Brotaur: New Potential for Thunder Dragon Danger!?

This is just a collection of notes and ideas I've had since the recent Forbidden and Limited List was revealed this week for Yu-Gi-Oh! as the deck that I'm currently playing (Danger! Thunder Dragons which for the rest of this post will be referred to as THUD) got hit in a couple areas.  Namely;

-Summon Sorceress to 0
-Galaxy-Eyes Darkmatter Dragon to 0
-Phantom Skyblaster to 1

What's interesting about this is that these hits were made with THUD in mind so that they wouldn't have to directly touch the deck this soon (gotta sell those fall Mega Tins after all!) the deck...doesn't really care about them if I may be honest.  True losing Sorc and Darkmatter means you can't do the combo that lets you summon Amorphage Goliath off Arkbrave Dragon on the opponent's turn but honestly the Darkmatter combo and build focusing on it wasn't THAT much better than the "standard" build and if anything it made your mirror match worse as using Darkmatter against a THUD player would allow them to banish a Dragonduo, summon a Dragonroar that would add itself to the hand (and fetch Duo on your turn) while using Dragonhawk to mulligan your hand for outs like Levianeer or sided cards.  The guy who won an ARG with THUD didn't even play the package (or Skyblaster) and I think his list is something we should be looking towards to build a base.  Furthermore most THUD players who've had a great deal of experience with the deck would tell you that Summon Sorceress was useful in the deck but not needed.  Combos based on her were weaker to Hand Traps such as Ghost Ogre and she was really only used to unbrick your worst hands.  The big oof from this list is that Skyblaster going to 1 means you have 2 less Starter cards but I think until DANE drops you just play Dark Grepher and Armageddon Knight with Destrudo to make up for it.

Which leads me to the topic of this post: DANE (Dark Neostorm) and the release of a card in that set that I think is worth looking at from the perspective of this deck as it continues to focus on abusing the Guardragon package to help produce its disgusting end boards.  It's a confirmed Secret Rare called Omni-Dragon Brotaur;

Omni-Dragon Brotaur
Lv. 1 Dark
Dragon/Effect/0/0
If a monster you control is destroyed by battle or an opponent’s card effect: You can Special Summon this card from the GY (if it was there when that monster was destroyed) or hand (even if not), but banish it when it leaves the field. If this card is Special Summoned: You can target 1 face-up monster on the field; discard 1 card, and if you do, add 1 monster with the same Type and Attribute, but with different name of the targeted monster from your Deck to your hand. You can only use each effect of “Omni Dragon Brotaur” once per turn.

That's a decent amount of text but basically this guy has a similar summoning condition as Darkest Diabolos, Lord of the Lair and upon being special summoned you can ditch a card and fetch specific monsters.  His effect triggers off your cards being destroyed by the opponent period so if you have him in hand/GY and your opponent say uses Ghost Ogre on your Saryuja or Guardragon then Brotaur can hit the board and help you extend and that's what I want to talk about here: Brotaur's potential to help THUD extend further.

First lets talk about getting this guy on the field.  The most likely way you're going to summon him is off Saryuja Skull Dread's 3rd effect (Special Summon a monster from the hand) OR Guardragon Elpy's effect (Special Summon 1 Dragon-Type Monster from your deck).  Once he hits the board depending on where you are in your combo he can discard a card out of your hand (preferrably a Danger! or a Thunder Dragon that you want to banish out of the GY) and grab what you need to keep going and the list of targets the typical THUD deck has at its disposal is interesting;

Dark Dragon (Targets include any of the Guardragons and Brotaur itself): Chaos Dragon Levianeer, Darkest Diabolos Lord of the Lair, Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon, Defrag Dragon, Chaos Emperor Dragon (both versions), Black Dragon Collapserpent, Destrudo the lost Dragon's Frission, Fanastical Dragon Phantazmay, Aether the Evil Empowering Dragon

Light Dragon (Targets include Wyverburstar): White Dragon Wyverburstar, Eclipse Wyvern, Prime Material Dragon, Sauravis the Ancient and Ascended

Earth Dragon (Targets include Saryuja Skull Dread): Any Amorphage (Goliath and Lechary)

Dark Thunder (Targets include Thunder Dragon Colossus): Thunder Dragondark, Dragonroar and Dragonduo

Light Thunder (Targets include Thunder Dragon Titan): Thunder Dragon, Thunder Dragonhawk, Batteryman Solar

Obviously the best use of this guy is to grab a Dark Dragon as Levianeer is your bomb, Diabolos is solid and Collapserpent is an extender.  Grabbing Goliath and immediately summoning it off Saryuja can also be cute and it lets you do cute side options like grabbing Lechary, setting it and using Heratic Sphere's tribute effect to pull Goliath out of the deck to turn Lechary on against decks like Mystic Mine burn.

Now the downside to Brotaur is the discard requirement which makes you weaker to Ash Blossom/Effect Veiler and having to special summon it to get the search.  By summoning him off Elpy you're admitting that you're probably not going to see Diabolos that game unless you've already drawn him as you're ideally aiming to fetch Levianeer first and Diabolos second.  I want to say the solution is that you max out on Brotaur so you can draw into and summon it off Saryuja but the argument to that is if you draw it and can't special summon the card then Brotaur is a brick in a deck that is literally a pile of bricks held together by the glue that is Saryuja.  I'll test both routes as I prepare for my upcoming Regionals which will most likely have me facing against Orcust, Salamangreat, Mystic Burn and Altergiests.

All in all as I've said twice now I think Brotaur has some merit to the deck and I have no doubt the top level THUD players have been playtesting with this card.  Brotaur looks to be the cheapest Secret Rare of DANE right now so if you can pick them up on the cheap then do it as for all we know once Aaron Chase Furman or Blair Hunter get a top with the deck and if they're playing Brotaur then the card'll double in price.

And that's pretty much it.  Just shooting the shit here.  Until next time.

BT vs Kagero seems to be the format with other decks sometimes getting a word in edgewise.  BT is still looking to be the BDIF but Kagero can at least defeat it if they can slightly highroll as if they can aggro them asap and keep the tempo up then they have a chance to beat the deck by the time Dragonic Overlord the Great hits the field.  However if the BT player survives this then they're probably going to win.  Kagero rolls pretty much everything else in the format and if I were to make a Tier list I'd say that BT is Tier S, Kagero is Tier A and everything is Tier B and below.  What's also noteworthy is that Kagero is moving away from Dragonic Waterfall and focusing on playing Dragonic Overlord, Dragonic Overlord the Great and (if the player can get ahold of him) Dual Axe Archdragon.  DOtG's playstyle is naturally better against Protect decks like OTT and Angel and Dual Axe allows you to blitz people with Guard Restrict from the onset.  Furthermore by playing more Overlords you make Dragon Buster's Soul Blast 2 skill more likely to go off and focusing on DotG means you aren't required to constantly reride in order to attempt to win which naturally makes Murakumo sad.

Oh and BT is able to build up hefty hand size like OTT and NN so they can easily defend against Waterfall and push back.  That also probably has something to do with it.

Cardfight!! Vanguard V - Episode 50 Review

Our episode begins with Takuto asking Aichi if he knows the importance of this fight as it is more than just a simple game of cards.  I'm pretty sure he's aware of this as most of this season has been anything but normal card games, dumbass.  Blah blah blah this is a fight between Cray and Brandt and if Takuto loses he stops being the Destiny Conductor, the girls will be freed from being Called Walkers (but lose their memories which Kourin tells Misaki she's fine with) and if he wins then Brandt will rule Cray.  Naoki once again proving to be the best character literally asks "so what?" seeing as anything happening on Cray doesn't really matter to Earth much.  Takuto says things that are basically summed up as if Brandt wins then everyone in the world will forget about Vanguard which in turn would kill the game itself.

I'm too busy laughing at these faces to be awed by this moment.

Aichi gives a hero speech about how Vanguard has changed his life and everyone else present says some other cliche/cringe things as we begin our fight...in spaaaaaaace.  Well actually Aichi's PSY-Qualia takes his spirit to the United Sanctuary where he meets Blaster Blade and we get a short moment of awe from him before he vanishes.  Blaster Blade takes this as a sign that their connection has been restored and calls for the armies to begin their attack on the invaders.  Honestly I'm a bit disappointed they didn't do more with this scene as it's the first meeting of this sort between Aichi and Blaster Blade but with like two lines to show for it.  I dunno it just feels like when the protagonist of a card anime gets the chance to speak with their ace monster they'd have a minute of talk before moving onto the next scene.  After this Aichi ends up on the Moon as he can see Earth, Cray and Brandt at the same time while Takuto explains that this will be the stage for their fight.

Is that a subtle reference to Ahmes?

The two throw down and after Aichi rides Blaster Blade we get verbal confirmation from Miwa to the group that Kai used to own the card as a child while Ibuki remarks to himself that this particular card seems to be the thing that is keeping Aichi tied to Vanguard.  He then wonders if Aichi will be the Messiah that protects Planet Cray and Earth as Takuto rides Brandt then explains his ability to reverse trigger effects (and by that I'm sure he means just Crits and Heals) which strikes the fear of god in everyone.  He attacks Aichi and while no triggers are flipped Kai points out the real problem will be on the coming turn.  Meanwhile on Cray some mysterious figure launches an attack against the Royal Paladins that erases some of the units from existence?  That's a shame.  I would have liked it if the attack just wiped the clan out entirely and in real life as well.  Aichi rides Wallfred, does RP things and on his attack flips a Crit...which means he ends up dealing no damage because of Brandt's ability.  He still manages to get a hit in which puts Takuto to 4 damage but he isn't bothered by it.  Instead he gives a villain speech as he rides into Wandering Star Hulk Deity, Brandt Ringer.

Get these hands.

For a final boss of a season Brandt Ringer does look pretty fearsome though I do have to be the asshole and say that his introduction is pretty lame compared to others.  Previous bosses like Omea Glendios, Aurageyser Doomed and Deus Ex Machina had fanstastic summoning animations and some really good background music accompanying them.  Brand Ringer just slowly rises up from the ground going "dur hur hur I'm taller than you" which I guess is supposed to be intimidating but I honestly find it to be lazy.  Given the awful look of the background characters in this episode I'm pretty sure I'm right in this.  Seriously go watch Takuto Reverse vs Aichi and when he rides Star Vader, Omega Glendios.  It's sick as hell.  Anyway Takuto goes on the offensive and Aichi flips a Heal Trigger on damage but Kai figures that since Brandt had a trigger reverse ability then Ringer should as well which is correct.  Brandt Ringer for all intents and purposes works just like the Brandt from the Original Series except replace a Stand Trigger nerf for a Front Trigger nerf.  Thus Aichi takes a damage and while he manages to survive the turn Takuto remarks that he won't be able to stay in the fight for much longer at this rate.  Then we get the return of his violin theme that played when Aichi got zombie'd as Cray itself is starting to get fire bombed by Brandt Ringer and he proudly declares that today will be the day that Vanguard disappears.

It's pretty easy to throw out the term "BT is Tier 0" I don't think we're quite there yet.  It's clearly in a class of its own however and I'd say if anything that BT Melody is Tier 1 and nothing else is.  Kagero and the rest?  Tier 2.  Regarding the other decks that got support in EB06 none of them were able to make it to do much other than allow Novas to get a top 8 in singles and a top 4 in Teams.  What is with Japan's obsession with Perfect Raizer by the way?  The card is ass.  We also had the rare Premium tournament (which honestly looks to be a healthier format than the BT vs the world environment that is standard imo) and look at all the strange things we're seeing here.  Ange Trois, Deletor Messiah and Magus Tomwater are nothing new but Altmile Brave and Ahsha Token spam?  Excuse me what?  And this is before Premium Collection!  I need to play that Blusha list but picking up the deck again is gonna be a royal pain.
